Description

A watching brief was undertaken by Portsmouth Museums Service during the construction of a major extension to the Johnson and Johnson Factory, Paulsgrove, in 1981. The watching brief was carried out over several months and included the monitoring of a pipe trench cut across grass in front of the building in the September which revealed a Late Iron Age ditch. A mechanical digger was used to clean topsoil from the projected course of the ditch which ran between the corner of an existing building on the site and the edge of the A27. Three 1m wide cuts were then made along the exposed length of the ditch in order to reveal the fill and profile of the feature. In another trench to the west, Roman pottery and one possible Saxon sherd was found in the spoil heap. Portsmouth Museums Service Accession No: 1981/373.
