Event/Activity EPM27 - Archaeological Watching Brief at Chedworth Crescent, Paulsgrove
Technique(s)
Date
June 2003
Organisation
CKC Archaeology
Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by CKC Archaeology in 2003 on the site of former garages to the rear of 34-60, Chedworth Crescent, Paulsgrove, Portsmouth.
No archaeology was observed during the groundworks on this site. This was probably due to the result of extensive cut and filled operations that seem to have taken place to level the site when housing was built around Chedworth Crescent after the Second World War. The area remained agricultural fields until the early-1930s. On the south side of the site, disturbance continued to a depth of over 2.5m. This had resulted in a large, partly buried revetment wall being built to prevent soils on the site from slumping into the gardens of houses to the south.
