Full Description

Memorial to George Bayne, philanthropist, who died 19th January 1876. The memorial, which consists of a stone column on a plinth, was originally located in Mile End Cemetery [see MPM1584], where George Bayne was buried. [1] The memorial was moved to Kingston Cemetery at some point after the Mile End site was cleared to become a memorial garden in the late-1950s. It can still be seen in a photograph of Mile End cemetery taken c1958-61 before the colonnade was demolished. [2] Mile End cemetery no longer exists, the site having been redeveloped as the Continental Ferry Port in 1978 [3]. This may be the only memorial to have survived from the cemetery. [HER Officer] The column bears the following inscription: THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY OF GEORGE BAYNE BY WHOSE EXERTIONS FOR MORE THAN A QUARTER OF A CENTURY A SOUND RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR EDUCATION WAS IMPARTED TO THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN OF THE POORER CLASSES OF THIS BOROUGH. HE WAS BORN 19TH. JULY, 1819, DIED 19TH. JANUARY 1876 AND IS INTERRED IN THIS CEMETERY. WILLIAM PINK ESQ. MAYOR.
