Full Description
One of two former ward blocks built as an extension to the Portsea Island Union Workhouse in 1883. Designed by Charles W Bevis and Walter S Hill of Gloucester Chambers, King's Road Portsmouth. Built by D W Lewis of Ottawa Terrace, Portsmouth. One block would have housed women, the other men. They were to be separated by boundary walls. A foundation stone was laid on the 28th February 1883, although it is unclear which block this related two. Each building has a four storey centre block with pediment and a bay window on the ground floor at the centre of each wing. [1]
The workhouse infirmary later became St Mary's Hospital. The block has now been converted into private flats.
