Full Description

Site of Portsdown & Horndean Light Railway, an electric tramway that operated between Horndean and Cosham 1903-1935. [1] [2, 3] The railway was constructed by Dick Kerr & Company Limited between 1902 and 1903, opening 2nd March 1903. It ran from just south of the main London and South Western Railway line at Cosham to Horndean via Portsdown Hill, Purbrook and Waterlooville. [4] Part of an abutment to a former bridge for the railway survives on the corner of Southwick Hill Road and London Road Cosham (see MPM1476). Two flights of concrete steps constructed as an access point for passengers to the railway also survive part way up Portsdown Hill on the west side of London Road, Cosham (see MPM2139). The remains of foundations to a bridge and a layer thought to be part of an embankment to the railway were observed during a watching brief at Cosham Interchange in 2008 (see MPM1185). [1] The route of the railway as depicted on the HER is represented by a rough line using the 1910 Ordnance Survey map as a guide. [2]
