Full Description
Site of East Southsea Station which was located at the terminal to the Southsea branch line railway (see MPM1870) near St Ronan's Road/Waverley Road. The station opened in 1885 and was originally known as Southsea Station. It was the only station serving the Southsea branch line and had three platforms. The name was changed to East Southsea Station in 1896. In c.1904 to save on running costs the terminal station was replaced by a wooden platform in the station yard. [1, p19] (The wooden platform was located roughly where Nos. 1-2 Chewter Close and the entrance to the close are now situated).
The original terminal station building can be seen in the background of a photograph of East Southsea Station taken c.1910, when it was in use as a garage belonging to Baldwin S Millard & Co Motor Engineers. The wooden platform in use as the station from c.1904 can be seen on the right of the photograph. [2]
Large parts of the original terminal station had been incorporated into a garage in Granada Road which was owned by Messrs Stringer in 1969. [1, p26]
The whole site has since been redeveloped (HER comment).
